  • a large spreading tree, usually epiphytic when young, the trunks with large buttresses, and the young stems glabrous.
  • its leaves are green, glabrous, up to 25 cm long, and with rusty coloured hairs beneath.
  • its inflorescence is fleshy and encloses numerous small flowers.
  • its fruit is large (2–2.5 cm across), orange turning purplish, and are on a long stalk.
