Etymology:
The epithet rakiura refers to the type locality (Stewart Id) as Rakiura is the Maori name for Stewart Island.
 Description

Slender lax tufts with culms 15–40 cm. Leaf-sheath glabrous or sometimes shortly pubescent-scabrid near margins. Ligule (0.5)–1–2 mm. Leaf-blade (4)–8–20 cm, flaccid, soft, flat to folded, occasionally entirely smooth or with finely scabrid midrib and margins. Panicle 4–7.5 cm. Spikelets 5.5–7.5 mm. Glumes ± unequal, elliptic, acute; lower 3–4.5 mm, upper 4–5 mm. Lemma 3.5–4.5 mm, oblong-elliptic, obtuse. Palea 3–4 mm. Anthers 0.5–0.7 mm.
