Synonymy:
Holotype. New Zealand, South Island, northwest Nelson, Mt Owen massif, east of Mt Bell, 1100 m, S. Courtney s.n., 22 Jan 2004 (CHR 551322!).
Etymology:
The specific epithet improcerus(Latin: diminutive) refers to the low stature of the species in comparison to M. obovatus.
